NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Byrne added that the new technology would allow members of the public to verify the identity of an officer who may have violated the law.
“For the first time in NYPD history, all 36,000 officers will have an email address [and] a smart phone,” Byrne said. “Both our vehicles and smartphones will have GPS.”
The New York City Council is currently debating several new police reform bills, including a bill know as the Right to Know Act, which would require for all officers to identify themselves by providing a business card prior to searching an individual.
