WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On June 4, 2015, the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced that a cybersecurity breach possibly compromised the personal data of up to four million current and former US federal employees.
“We continue to make progress in terms of attribution,” Schiff, the most senior Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, told reporters on Tuesday night according The Hill newspaper.
Schiff, however, cautioned the public would have to wait until the administration of President Barak Obama “feels comfortable making a public attribution.”
Schiff made the comments after senior officials from OPM, as well as officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security briefed the House Intelligence Committee earlier on Tuesday.
US officials have indicated they believe Chinese hackers carried out the cyber-attack.
The Obama administration is steering clear of blaming China for the attack. The United States currently runs a $425 billion annual trade deficit with China and around one third of all US Treasury bonds are held by the State Bank of China.
