Nebraska Lawmakers Override Governor’s Veto, Ban Death Penalty - Reports

Nebraska’s lawmakers have passed a bill that abolishes the state’s death penalty overriding Governor Pete Ricketts’ veto, local media reported.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Senators voted 30-19, making Nebraska the first traditionally conservative state since 1973 to eliminate the death penalty.

“Nebraska has abolished the death penalty in a landmark veto-override vote backed by a coalition of conservatives who oppose capital punishment,” KETV reported on Wednesday.

Nebraska joins 18 other US states and Washington, DC in banning capital punishment.
