A resident of Texas has been arrested for providing material support for the Islamic State by attempting to go to Syria and fight for the terrorist group, the US Department of Justice said in a press release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Asher Abid Khan, 20, was arrested on Tuesday morning in Spring, and is due to stand before a US federal court later in the day, according to the release.

According to the criminal complaint, Khan and a friend had plotted to join the Islamic State in Syria, conspiring with a Turkish-based ISIL militant to facilitate the process.

Khan sent the Islamic State supporter the messages “I wanna join ISIS [Islamic State] can you help?” and “I wanna die as a Shaheed,” the release noted.

When Khan arrived at Istanbul, Turkey, his family deceived him with false information about his mother’s health in order to make him return back to the United States.
