MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Chairman of the House committee investigating the 2012 Benghazi attacks Trey Gowdy called on former US Secretary of State and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton to testify about the 2012 Benghazi attacks on the US diplomatic compound, as well as the use of private email address during her tenure.
In a letter, Gowdy has requested that the first hearing take place during the week beginning May 18, while the second could occur not later than June 18.
Gowdy also included some 136 sample questions in the letter.
US Republican lawmakers assert that the State Department and the White House did not send military back-up to the diplomat and embassy employees in Benghazi to avoid admitting that the attack was mounted by terrorists linked with al-Qaeda. US President Barack Obama's administration said it decimated the terrorist network with the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011.
Clinton took responsibility for mistakes made in the aftermath of the attacks, but rejected accusations that the Obama administration misled US citizens.
In March, The New York Times reported that Clinton used a personal email address for department business while she served as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, stirring up controversy.
