“On the one hand, the US military says they want the best and most qualified but they are reaching into the prison system,” Rodrigues said. “What’s off-putting about the program is they will take people on temporary protected status and with a U Visa, where someone can claim they are a victim of a crime, and stay here to testify and provide valuable information.”
Rodrigues said someone who is an illegal immigrant and serves in the US military can stay in the United States and can commit crimes without fear of being deported.
“If you don’t want to become a citizen and keep up with your legal status, serve four years in the military and you cannot be deported,” Rodrigues said.
Rodrigues explained that a major problem with casually allowing legal or illegal immigrants to join the US military is that it might turn into an all-immigrant army, which can turn against native-born Americans.
“People don’t want to compare it to the downfall of Rome, where the Roman Army was made of far too many people with no loyalty to the homeland,” Rodrigues said. “That problem exists in the United States already.”
Rodrigues concluded that it is important for the United States to continue acquiring people from different cultures and individuals with diverse language abilities to help out the defense of the homeland, but should recruit legal immigrants or US citizens.
Save Our State is a US advocacy organization headquartered in California, opposed to illegal immigration in the United States.
