Three people died and three more were injured after a knife-wielding man launched an attack in the English town of Reading on Saturday evening.

UK police have declared a stabbing incident that killed three people in Reading as a terrorist attack.

"Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon, senior national coordinator for the Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) network, has this morning declared the incident a terrorist incident," Thames Valley police said in a statement.

It added that CTP South East will take over the investigation.

A 25-year-old Libyan man, Khairi Saadalah, was arrested on suspicion of murder following a stabbing incident in a park in Reading, 65 km to the west of London, on Saturday evening.

According to witnesses, the attack happened when a man approached a group of about ten people resting in Forbury Gardens and began to stab them. As a result of the attack, three people died and three more were hospitalised with injuries.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he is "appalled and sickened" by the Reading stabbing attack. Earlier in the day, he held a meeting with security officials, police and senior ministers to be updated about the investigation into the incident.
