The International Centre for Sport Security said safety measures taken during the match between Russia and England at UEFA Football Championship on June 11 were insufficient.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The measures taken to provide security during the match between Russia and England at UEFA Football Championship on June 11 were insufficient, the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) said in a statement on Monday.

"The International Centre for Sport Security condemns the violent behaviour of fans in Marseille. Spectators located in the Russian supporter areas were able to overcome barriers and access the English supporters’ section. This demonstrates that preventative measures in place to segregate the fans were inadequate. It appears there was a breakdown in general structure, response and crowd management," the statement read.

On Saturday, numerous clashes between English and Russian football fans have been continuing in the city throughout the day. Local police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the fighting fans ahead of the match between the two national teams.

Later in the day, Russian national football team played in a draw with the team of England at the Velodrome stadium in Marseille as a part of the UEFA’s Euro-2016 championship. The game ended with 1:1 score. After the match, the clashes between Russian and English fans erupted again at the stadium.

ICSS is an independent NGO specializing in sport safety, security and integrity.
