MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) will make a decision on the adoption of a set of amendments to the football game rules in March 2018, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told reporters.
"We hope that with the tests that we are doing now, in the next two years, we will be in a position to finalize the protocol [of game rules]," Infantino said, adding that the changes are expected to be approved in March 2018.
According to the FIFA president, the amendments will concern three of the existing football rules – video replays of contentious game moments to help the referees make decisions, the triple punishment, which will be abolished, and the fourth shift of team members in extra time.
The three proposed amendments to the protocol will affect not only the World Cup games, but all football tournaments, Infantino noted. The first World Cup championship to implement the new rules will be the 2018 Russia tournament, according to the FIFA head.
