Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova climbed one notch to second place in the latest Women Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, despite her unsuccessful performance in Paris last week.
Sharapova crashed out of the quarter-finals of the WTA Paris Open last Friday after a shock defeat to Germany’s Angelique Kerber, the world No. 27 at the time.
Vera Zvonareva is another Russian in the world’s top 10 holding eighth place in the rating list, which is topped by Victoria Azarenka from Belarus.
Sharapova, 24, who lost to Azarenka in the final of the Australian Open, has not won a tournament since victory in Cincinnati in August 2011.
Her last Grand Slam victory was at the Australian Open in January 2008.
