Cutting-edge laboratories cannot prevent doping scandals

MOSCOW, December 21 (RIA Novosti) - Even cutting-edge laboratories cannot prevent all doping scandals, the head of the anti-doping service of the Russian Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport said Wednesday.

"No ultra-modern laboratories can guarantee prevention of doping scandals," Nikolai Durmanov said. "Unfortunately, not all problems can be avoided after tests at a domestic level."

The head of the Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport Vyacheslav Fetisov had said previously that the Russian national team had one of the best anti-doping laboratories in the world, and would not encounter problems in this area at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Russian cross-country skiers Larisa Lazutina and Olga Danilova were stripped of their medals and banned from participating in the sport for two years after they tested positive for doping at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
