MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The first Russian-French conference dedicated to the Strasbourg lawyer and poet of the 17−19th centuries Ludwig Heinrich von Nicolay, who became the president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1798, will be held on October 17 at the Strasbourg National and University Library as part of the Leningrad Region’s presentation on the sidelines of the Council of Europe.

“This exact topic of the scientific conference was chosen for a reason. The connection between Russia’s north-west region and Alsace formed historically, primarily due to the quality of education provided by the University of Strasbourg. In the middle of the 18th century, over a third of all students at the University of Strasbourg were from Russia. The third owner of the Monrepos estate, Ludwig Heinrich von Nikolay not only was born in Strasbourg, but also graduated from the University of Strasbourg, and later became the president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg,” the press service of the Leningrad Region government reports.

During the conference, Russian and French researchers will present and discuss eight reports on different topics, including the history of Russia-Alsace relations in the 18th century, the studies on Russia by the University of Strasbourg researchers of that time, and the research and literary creations of Ludwig Heinrich von Nikolay.

Following the conference, a compilation of reports will be published in French and Russian.
