World leaders rose up against Islamic terrorists in a rare moment of unity shown both at the G20 summit in Antalya and the APEC summit in Manila, with Presidents Putin and Obama even holding a half-hour eye-to-eye talk on how to wipe out ISIL.

In an article entitled “Putin, Russia and the West: After Paris & Sinai, G20 summit is bad news for ISIS [ISIL] terrorists”, written by Bryan MacDonald and carried by RT, the journalist compared the 2014 G20 meeting with this one, observing that:

“This year’s reaction was rather different. Barack Obama was snapped deep in conclave with the Russian leader on Sunday night. The following day, the pair were photographed sharing a joke. Meanwhile, David Cameron’s stance had shifted 180 degrees. For his part, Putin even admitted that London had been sharing intelligence with Russia in the wake of the Sinai atrocity.”

While the Russian President did announce that around 40 countries had been financing ISIL, including some G20 members, he concluded that – quote – “I think that now the realization that an effective fight [against terror] can only be staged together is coming to everybody”

This led Mr. MacDonald to conclude that “Russia and the NATO countries are now discovering that there are more things that unite them than divide them. The real danger is ISIS [ISIL]. Everything else is a sideshow within a sideshow.”

To discuss this in more detail, we are joined by Timofei Bordachev, Director of Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS) at the Higher School of Economics (studio guest); Mamoun Fandy, Director of "London Global Strategy Institute" (LGSI); and Max Suchkov, Visiting Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study of Russia at New York University (from New York).
