European Council President Donald Tusk expects Italy to play a constructive role in dealing with EU common challenges under Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – President of the European Council Donald Tusk congratulated on Tuesday Paolo Gentiloni on being appointed Italian prime minister and expressed his confidence that Italy will continue to play a constructive role in dealing with EU common challenges.

"Your appointment comes at a crucial time for Italy and the European Union. Today, more than ever, we need unity and solidarity. I am confident that through your leadership and commitment, Italy will maintain its constructive role in dealing with the many challenges we face," Tusk said in a letter of congratulations.

He expects Italy to continue playing a key role in the spheres such as consolidating the economic recovery and maintaining the pace of economic reforms, ensuring financial stability and advancing the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union, implementation of a lasting solution to the migration crisis, as well as providing effective responses to geopolitical challenges.

"I look forward to working with you and to welcoming you at the European Council on 15 December," Tusk added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Gentiloni submitted to President Sergio Mattarella a list of ministers to form the new cabinet. The swearing-in ceremony is set to be held at 19:00 GMT at the Quirinal Palace.

On December 7, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi stepped down after his constitutional reform proposals were rejected by Italians in a referendum, which was largely seen as an opportunity for the nation to express its dissatisfaction with the government.
