MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The statement added that the meeting was held at Majali's request.

"During the talks, there was an exchange of opinions on actual issues of regional agenda taking a special attention to the situation around Syria and the state of affairs in the Israeli-Palestinian settlement," the statement said.

The so-called Arab Spring protests shook the Middle East in 2011. In Syria, the protests resulted in clashes between the government forces and opposition. Since then, the Middle Eastern country has been mired in a war, which involves Syrian army, numerous opposition factions, as well as terrorist groups, and which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. International community, including Russia and Jordan have undertaken a number of steps to settle the conflict.

Palestinians seek diplomatic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which is partially occupied by Israel, and the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government refuses to recognize Palestine as an independent political and diplomatic entity, and builds settlements on the occupied areas, despite objections from the United Nations.
