Beijing intends to develop relations with Washington and maintains close contact with the team of US President-elect Donald Trump, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the Chinese leader Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with Trump and discussed the development of relations between the two countries, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

"The Chinese side and Trump's team are in a close contact. We intend to maintain it in the future," Geng Shuang said at a briefing.

Geng added that Beijing pays great attention to China-US relations and is willing to expand cooperation with the United States on bilateral, multilateral and global levels.

On November 8, Donald Trump secured a victory in the United States presidential election with 290 electoral votes against his rival Hillary Clinton's 232.
