According to the German foreign minister, the security situation in the region has changed, and Germany is taking part in NATO’s security reassurance measures in the Baltic countries.
Steinmeier invited Sweden’s Margot Wallstrom, Denmark's Kristian Jensen and Finland's Timo Soini to Villa Borsig on a lake in the suburbs of Berlin for talks on a regional and global security. Four ministers last met in this informal "N3+1" format two years ago.
NATO has been boosting its military presence in Europe, particularly in Eastern European and the Baltic states, since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis, citing Russia's alleged interference in that conflict as justification for the move.
