MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Cairo group of the Syrian opposition does not expect drastic changes in the Washington policy on the crisis settlement in the region after the US elections, but hopes the new US leader would revive the failed Russia-US ceasefire deal, leader of Cairo group Jihad Makdissi told Sputnik.
"I doubt there would be a radical change in US strategy, but definitely we will see different style in expressing their views. … I wouldn't count too much on what is being said now during the presidential campaign, because facts would be different inside the Oval office," Makdissi said.
Trump, in turn, says that Russia, Syria and Iran are the only players who really fight against terrorists in the Middle East. He believes that "Putin outsmarted Obama" in the region and wants to work closer with Russia in fight against Daesh (banned in Russia).
"I am definitely hoping that they would be able to revive the US-Russian agreement on cessation of hostilities in order to protect Syrian civilians and pave the way to resume serious peace talks," Makdissi said.
The Cairo group leader added that Russians and Americans can only provide military support to fight Daesh, but at the end of the day Syrians on both sides must unify themselves to completely wipe out terrorists.
The US presidential election will be held on November 8. The candidates run neck-and-neck, with Trump being one percent ahead of Clinton, according to the ABC News/Washington Post poll as of November 1.
