ANKARA (Sputnik) — Late on Monday, three US officials from the Justice Ministry and one official from the US State Department arrived in Ankara and launched the work on the case with their Turkish colleagues from the Justice Ministry’s International Law and Foreign Affairs Directorate the following day, the Anadolu news agency reported.
On July 15, the Turkish authorities said that an attempted coup was taking place in the country. The Turkish government said that Gulen who, Ankara believes, is seeking to overthrow the current government was allegedly linked to the thwarted coup. Gulen is currently living in the US city of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.
On August 4, a court in Turkey issued in absentia a formal warrant for Gulen’s arrest. Ankara has also officially asked the United States for his extradition, claiming it had collected the necessary evidence, and later processed and supplemented the needed materials.
