Kerry Raises Question of Freedom of Press With Turkish Counterpart
13:18 GMT 20.05.2016 (Updated: 10:58 GMT 06.08.2022) US Secretary of State John Kerry brought up the issue of freedom of press during a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in the Belgian capital of Brussels, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby said in a press release on Friday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Lately, administration of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has arrested reporters and seized control of newspapers and television networks that have produced reports critical of the government.
"The Secretary [Kerry] also discussed the importance of freedom of expression and a free and independent media," John Kirby stated.
The two top diplomats also reviewed during the meeting the situation in Syria, including the cessation of hostilities, and the campaign against Daesh in Iraq, according to the release.
Daesh is a terrorist group outlawed in the United States, Russia and numerous other countries. The infamous group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate on territories under its control.
