WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US president’s remarks follow several high profile terrorist attacks carried out in major international cities in recent months including Paris, Brussel and Istanbul resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for all of these latest attacks.
"We need to do even more to prevent the flow of foreign terrorist fighters," Obama said, adding that as the Islamic State terrorist group is "squeezed" in Syria and Iraq, and the world can anticipate them "lashing out elsewhere."
Obama also said that leaders need to do more "when it comes to intelligence sharing," and that the world cannot afford "to have critical intelligence not being shared as needed whether between governments or within governments."
On March 22, two suicide bomb blasts hit the Brussels international airport and an another explosion shook the Maelbeek metro station, killing 35 people and injuring more than 300.
Obama said that that after the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, the United States deployed surge teams to Europe to help local authorities, and said that Washington plans to send additional teams in the "near future."
