WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — After Christie endorsed Trump earlier this week, several local media outlets called on the New Jersey governor to resign. However, Christie said on Thursday he had no plans to resign and would remain governor his term was up in 2018, when he would join the private sector.
"I have urged him [Trump] not to leave the party," Christie said during a news conference on Thursday when asked whether the reports that Trump could leave the Republican party were true. “I’ve urged him not to do that because I don't think that's constructive way to go about it and he knows that."
In recent weeks, some members of the Republican Party have called on the party to denounce Trump. On Wednesday, more than 75 national security and foreign policy experts — often referred to as neo-conservatives — pledged to abandon the Republican ticket if Trump is chosen as their party’s nominee.
Trump won the primary contests for the Republican nomination for US president in seven out of 12 states on Tuesday, further cementing his lead well ahead of the other Republican presidential candidates.
