MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Moscow and Washington have potential to overcome the current difficulties in the bilateral relations, former US ambassador to Russia Thomas Pickering said Tuesday.
"I believe that dialogue between Russia and the US is critical. If we could find answers to problems even in times of cold war, we can find 'exercise room' to get through the second wave of our problems that we have now," Pickering said at the conference on Russia-US ties in Moscow.
Thomas Pickering served as Washington's Ambassador to Russia in 1993-1996 and US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in 1997-2000.
Relations between Russia and the United States escalated amid the crisis in Ukraine. Washington and its allies accused Moscow of fueling the conflict and introduced several rounds of sanctions against Russia. Moscow has consistently denied the allegations.
