WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A new US deputy assistant secretary of defense responsible for Russia and Ukraine took over his duties on Monday, Defense Department spokeswoman Michelle Baldanza announced.

“Today Dr. Michael Carpenter started as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense with responsibility for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia. He also has responsibility for the Western Balkans and Conventional Arms Control,” Baldanza told RIA Novosti on Monday.

Baldanza explained that most recently Carpenter served in the White House as a special advisor to Vice President Joe Biden for Europe and Eurasia.

“He has also served at both the National Security Council and the Department of State working on Russian Affairs,” she added.

Carpenter has replaced Evelyn Farkas who quit in October. Farkas was a strong supporter of providing arms to Ukraine.
