According to Bhadrakumar the tone of US Secretary of State John Kerry and British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond during their meeting in London reflects the easing of tensions between Western countries and Russia, which will have an effect on the resolution of the Syrian conflict.
“As for the Kremlin's decision to roll up its sleeves and join in the fight against Islamic State, the US [and European allies] approve of it,” Bhadrakumar added.
During the press conference in Washington, Kerry said that the US and Russia agree on how the Syrian conflict should be solved.
“Undoubtedly, this is a defining moment. In spite of the tremendous pressure from the opponents and critics in the United States to change tactics toward interventionist role in Syria, Obama prefers a diplomatic way,” said Bhadrakumar.
The analyst also noted that US Secretary of State John Kerry chose a flexible pragmatic approach, stressing the need to resolve the conflict, rather than regime change in Syria. The US no longer stresses preconditions that Bashar al-Assad must leave his post. In addition, Kerry talked about Russia and Iran as future partners.
In addition, the author notes that the European allies are losing faith in the US as they are immersed in the refugee crisis and are trying to cope with it.
“The wreckage of the conflict reached Europe and although the United States is safe and is not affected by it, there is no way the US can wash its hands clean of the political and moral responsibility for the terrible tragedy that has unfolded,” Bhadrakumar said.
According to him, the fact that the West is swiftly approving Russia’s actions in Syria marks a new chapter in international relations and promises a resolution to the Syrian conflict.
Western countries have repeatedly accused Russia of supplying arms to the Syrian regime. Each time Moscow has clarified its position on Syria, pointing out that Russia is assisting the country in its fight against the terrorist threat, in full compliance with the international law.
