MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama discussed Tuesday's Iran nuclear deal over the phone, the Kremlin press service said Wednesday.

"The leaders praised the results of negotiations in Vienna on resolving the situation around the Iranian nuclear program. It was noted that the success of long-term efforts to find a political and diplomatic solution to this issue was made possible by the constructive cooperation of the P5+1, Iran, as well as the European Union," the press service said in a statement.

"Mutual intention was expressed to continue working together for a sustainable implementation of the Vienna agreements, as well as on certain other pressing international issues, including countering the threat of international terrorism," the statement said.

The talk was initiated by Washington, according to the statement.

"Both sides stressed that the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear program is in the interest of the entire international community, helps strengthen the nonproliferation regime and decrease tensions in the Middle East region".

"In this regard, the role of Russian-US dialogue in ensuring global security and stability was noted," the statement reads.
