Russia's governmental adviser on international relations and security Sergei Rogov said that the mutual nuclear deterrence itself is a built-in element of instability. He also specified that "differences on missile defense relate precisely to the fact that US missile defense systems could threaten Russia's nuclear deterrence capabilities."

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — The regime of mutual nuclear deterrence is a built-in element of instability in US-Russian relations, Russia's governmental adviser on international relations and security Sergei Rogov told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"As for the military sphere [of US-Russian relations], the mutual nuclear deterrence itself is a built-in element of instability," Rogov, member of advisory boards to Russia's Security Council, Foreign Ministry, and the State Duma, told the news agency.

He also specified that "differences on missile defense relate precisely to the fact that US missile defense systems could threaten Russia's nuclear deterrence [capabilities]."

Sergei Rogov, who is also the Director of the Institute for the US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Science (ISKRAN), pointed at the geopolitical differences between Russia and the United States.

"The United States refuses to recognize the post-Soviet area as the area of interests and security of Russia and tries to draw the former Soviet republics to NATO and the EU," ISKRAN's director told Sputnik.

Rogov concluded that compromises are possible within the geopolitical and military spheres of US-Russian cooperation, however the possibility of such compromises is doubtful given the cooled relations between the two countries following the 2014 crisis in Ukraine.
