A fire at a recycling plant in Columbus, Ohio is so big that almost half the city's firefighters are currently on the scene battling the blaze Friday.

The four-alarm fire at Columbus Pallet Recycling was reported at about 4pm in the afternoon.

Thick black smoke has been billowing out across the city, with one fire official telling the Columbus Dispatch it's the worst she's seen.

By about 6pm somewhere between one-third and one-half of the city's firefighters were on the scene, according to Battalion Chief Tracy Smith.

There have been some local road closures as well as closures of railroad tracks south of the plant towards which the fire was progressing.

Officials say they don't yet know how the blaze started, but that the plant is a "tinderbox" full of wooden pallets and propane tanks, some of which have been exploding.

No injuries have yet been reported.
