An earthquake has caused damage to buildings in the Taiwanese capital Taipei; the city's authorities have issued warnings to residents to move away from coastal areas to higher ground. The earthquake's epicenter was off the east coast of the island.
According to reports, one man was killed and another injured when one building in Taipei caught fire as a result of damage from the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey reported to have a magnitude of 6.6, and a depth of 18 miles [28.9 kilometers].

Japan's Meteorological Agency, which originally estimated the quake's magnitude at 6.8, also issued a one meter tsunami alert for islands forming part of Okinawa prefecture, which it later lifted.
