US Central Command (CENTCOM) commander Gen. Joseph Votel landed at the newly-rebuilt Iraqi air base near the city of Mosul early on Wednesday morning, the Central Command said via Twitter.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Votel visited US troops who rebuilt the airbase after Iraqi forces recaptured it from the Daesh in July.

CENTCOM said the base would be a vital logistics hub for Iraqi forces.

On October 17, Iraqi forces supported by Kurdish Peshmerga and US troops began the operation to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State terrorist group.

The US-led coalition is supporting the Iraqi Security Forces with air support, artillery, intelligence, advisors and forward air controllers, according to CENTCOM.
