TEL AVIV (Sputnik) – Israel’s missile defense system intercepted a rocket suspected of being launched by Palestinian fighters from the Gaza Strip, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said Sunday.
"A rocket launched from Gaza was intercepted by the Iron Dome. No injuries were reported," Peter Lerner tweeted after sirens were activated in the southern Ashkelon region.
The Iron Dome, an all-weather air defense system in use since 2011 to protect Israel from outside attacks, was used in the summer 2014 50-day military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.
Gaza residents joined anti-Israeli rallies that engulfed parts of the West Bank, Jerusalem and other Israeli cities after a spate of killings in response to stabbing attacks.
At least six Palestinians were killed along the Gaza Strip border fence on Saturday.
