WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Electromagnetic railguns are an experimental technology to launch projectiles using electromagnetic forces at greater speeds and further distances than traditional projectiles. The projectiles do not require explosives and destroy targets with kinetic energy.
“The electronics on-board the projectiles successfully measured in-bore accelerations and projectile dynamics, for several kilometers downrange, with the integral data link continuing to operate after the projectiles impacted the desert floor,” General Atomic stated Monday.
At present, railgun technology is in experimental stages.
