MOSCOW, December 27 (Sputnik) — The Iranian Air Force has shot down three drones Saturday in the third day of an ongoing massive military exercise in southern parts of the country, Press TV reported.

The unmanned aerial vehicles were brought down by three domestically designed and manufactured missiles fired from an ambush missile system known as Mersad, the news agency reported.

According to Press TV, the Islamic republic's Air Defense Force will carry out operations to spot and intercept drilled enemy hovercrafts during the military exercise on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Navy commander announced plans to test a new submarine also on Saturday, according to the state-run Tasnim news agency.

The country's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said that one of the main purposes of the military drills was to demonstrate Iran's capability in ensuring security in the region, as reported by Tasnim.

The six-day military drills code-named Mohammad Rasoulallah, meaning Mohammad the Messenger of God, began on Thursday. The country's Army Ground Force, Air Force, Air Defense Force and Navy are carrying out the military exercises to the west of the Strait of Hormuz over an area of 2.2 million square kilometers.
