MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A total of 1,026 foreigners were detained by Turkish security forces as they tried to illegally enter Turkey and crossover to Syria and Greece, local media reported on Monday, citing the Turkish General Staff.
The Turkish forces detained 926 Syrians, 28 Bulgarians, 18 Greek and three Iraqi citizens during the operation held on Sunday, the Anadolu news agency reported.
At least 50 people who attempted to cross into Syria from Turkey were arrested at the border, according to the media outlet.
In recent years, Turkish authorities boosted security measures along its borders with Iraq and Syria to prevent illegal border crossings, erecting 330 kilometers (205 miles) of walls along borders with the two countries.
