Two Israeli police officers died in hospital after they were wounded earlier in the day during terrorist attack at the Temple Mount complex, Jerusalem's holy site, according to Israel Police Foreign Press Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — Two police officers who were wounded earlier in the day during an attack at the Temple Mount complex, Jerusalem's holy site, have succumbed to their injuries, Israel Police Foreign Press Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Friday.

"Update to attack this morning in old city Jerusalem. 2 police officers died in hospital after being shot & critically injured by terrorists," Rosenfeld posted on his official Twitter page.

Earlier in the day, police said that a total of three police officers were wounded in the attack.

After three armed attackers opened fire at the Temple Mount complex, police pursued and killed the assailants.

The last time the Temple Mount complex closed off was after the 2014 assassination attempt on Yehudah Glick, an incumbent member of the Knesset, according to the Haaretz newspaper. The cancellation of Friday prayers has not been done since 2000, the newspaper added.
