"Today, UN inter-agency mission led by the Humanitarian coordinator Ali Al-Za'tari arrived in Aleppo," Dujarric stated. "The mission is assessing the needs of the newly displaced people from eastern Aleppo enhancing the current response mechanisms and looking at plans of inter-agency cross-line mission into the eastern part of the city as requested by the United Nations in its December plan."
Dujarric noted that some much needed assistance to the civilians in Aleppo is already being provided by the Syrian Red Crescent and its local partners with United Nations support.
Over the recent months, Aleppo has become a major battleground as Syrian government forces have attempted to liberate the eastern part of the city from opposition and terrorist groups who control it. The fighting has affected thousands of civilians trapped in Aleppo.
In November, Syrian government forces launched a large-scale offensive against the terrorist groups, mainly Jabhat Fatah al Sham — previously known as al-Nusra Front — in the eastern part of Aleppo.
