"Faced with the humanitarian catastrophe in Aleppo, Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, demanded immediate meeting of the UN Security Council in order to examine the situation in the martyred city and the ways of delivering relief to the people," French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
On Wednesday, the French Foreign Ministry is set to receive President of the City Council of Aleppo Brita Hagi Hassan.
The situation in Aleppo has been deteriorating steadily over the recent months. Thousands of citizens are believed to be trapped in the terrorist-besieged eastern parts of Aleppo with no access to food or water. There have been several attempts to establish a ceasefire, however the bids have failed.
Earlier this month, the first special operation to evacuate the citizens of eastern Aleppo was held. On Monday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian army had established complete control over 12 districts of eastern Aleppo, liberating some 40 percent of the region’s territory.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting the Syrian opposition groups striving to overthrow President Assad. In parallel, Damascus has to counter numerous extremist groups, in particular, Daesh, the terrorist group outlawed in Russia and many other countries.
