DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — The Syrian government forces have launched an offensive against the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) jihadist group and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, previously known as the Nusra Front, near the city of Homs, local media reported Thursday.
An army unit attacked Daesh positions and destroyed vehicles in Toloul al-Swwana settlement, located about 56 miles east of Homs. Jihadists suffered heavy losses, Syria’s state news agency SANA said citing a military source.
Syrian government forces also targeted the Nusra Front militants in the villages of al-Farhanyia and Ein Hussein al-Janoubi, located about 18 miles of Homs in the northern countryside of the Homs province. According to the news outlet, several jihadists were killed and some vehicles were destroyed.
Syria's civil war between government forces and opposition has been ongoing for over five years and has given rise to a number of terrorist groups, including the Jabhat Fatah Al-Sham and Daesh, both of which are outlawed in a number of countries, including Russia.
