Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel intends to purchase three more submarines from Germany.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) Israel intends to purchase three more submarines from Germany, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday.

"We … will sign contract with Germany on construction of three more submarines," Netanyahu said in a statement, issued by his press service.

The new submarines are expected to substitute the Israeli navy ships, which have reached their serviceable life expectancy.

Currently Israeli navy involves five German diesel-electric Dolphin-class submarines, which are nuclear-capable according to foreign media reports. The newest subs are equipped with power systems, which are independent from the air. Israel and Germany have already signed a contract for the construction of a sixth submarine.
