"We … will sign contract with Germany on construction of three more submarines," Netanyahu said in a statement, issued by his press service.
The new submarines are expected to substitute the Israeli navy ships, which have reached their serviceable life expectancy.
Currently Israeli navy involves five German diesel-electric Dolphin-class submarines, which are nuclear-capable according to foreign media reports. The newest subs are equipped with power systems, which are independent from the air. Israel and Germany have already signed a contract for the construction of a sixth submarine.
