"We were informed by our team in Damascus… there’s been a permission, an approval, that’s the terminology for it, by the government of Syria for all 19 besieged areas, that’s good news, by the end of June," de Mistura said during a press conference.
The United Nations has obtained data that Damascus released numerous fighters in Syria, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said.
"We are, as you know, very actively constantly monitoring the aspect of detainees and those who are being abducted [in Syria], but we did get the information today from one main source, but we would like to have more information, that some substantial number of fighters appear to have been released … we are talking about thousands and thousands," de Mistura said during a press conference.
It is too early to summit all parties to the Syrian conflict for the third round of the intra-Syrian peace talks, which should be launched as soon as possible, Staffan de Mistura said.
"Time is not yet mature for official third round of the intra-Syrian talks. We are intending and we want to do it as soon as possible, no doubt about that," de Mistura said during a press conference.
He added that security and humanitarian situation in the war-torn country should be improved before the new round of peace talks can take place.
