Violence Erupts as Islamic State Rises (1881)

The Syrian Army, supported by popular defense groups, on Sunday morning started offensive on the main stronghold of Daesh in the city of Al Qaryatayn in Syria's Homs province, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Sunday.

AL QARYATAYN (Sputnik) — The troops managed to take over residential areas on the outskirts of the city, according to the correspondent.

The onset of the infantry is under the cover of artillery and helicopters of the Syrian Arab Air Force. Fierce fighting continues in the northeast, south and southwest of Al Qaryatayn. Some of the terrorist armed groups try to flee from the village to the nearby mountains.

Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with forces loyal to the country's President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups, including Daesh and the Nusra Front, which have been blacklisted as terrorist organizations by many countries, including Russia.
