UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said that shelling of a hospital in the northwestern Syrian city of Maarat al-Numan resulted in the death of at least seven people, while eight missing employees of the facility are presumed dead. It did not say which of the warring parties was suspected to be behind the attack.
"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of missile attacks on at least five medical facilities and two schools in Aleppo and Idlib that killed close to 50 civilians, including children and injuring many," Farhan Haq told reporters.
He added that such attacks represented blatant violations of international law, contributed to fthe urther degrading of the already devastated healthcare system and prevented access to education in Syria.
"These incidents cast a shadow on the commitments made by the International Syria Support Group [ISSG] meeting in Munich. We must capitalize on the agreements reached and translate them into action if credibility of and confidence placed in the ISSG and the international community are to be justified."
The ISSG meeting on Thursday resulted in the adoption of a final communique that called for humanitarian access to be provided swiftly to all besieged areas in Syria and set a one-week deadline for the implementation of measures to end the hostilities in the country.
