According to the official, the airstrikes foiled a planned ISIL attack on Haditha.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A US-led international coalition on Friday killed 25 militants of the Islamic State jihadist group (IS) near the city of Ramadi, a senior Iraqi security official said as quoted by the local IraqiNews portal on Saturday.

“Warplanes of the international coalition, with coordination with the security forces, had managed to conduct an aerial bombing against an ISIL gathering in the area of Albu Hayat in the district of Haditha [99 miles east of Ramadi],” Iraqi Major General Ali Ibrahim said.

He added that the bombing resulted in the deaths of 25 IS militants and the destruction of four of their vehicles.

The US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against IS militants in Iraq since August 2014 and in Syria since September 2014. Despite the military campaign, the Islamic State continues making significant advances in both countries.

The city of Ramadi, the capital of the Anbar province, located some 70 miles from the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, was siezed by the militants on May 17. Hundreds of Iraqi security forces were killed in the battle and many more fled the city, leaving many of their weapons behind.
