MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to staff, Demirel died in Guven Hospital in the Turkish capital of Ankara, where he had reportedly been undergoing respiratory tract infection treatment.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu paid a tribute to former president in a Twitter post.
"He [Demirel] was a politician with unique style and will always be remembered for the services he provided to our country during his long political life," Davutoglu said.
Before becoming Turkey's 9th President in 1993, Demirel served as Turkey's Prime Minister for five terms.
After the 1980 Turkish coup, Demirel was banned from politics, but in 1987, following a constitutional reform, he returned to political activity.
