“According to reports received, the Israeli authorities have approved the construction of around 900 housing units in the village of Ramat Shlomo [on the outskirts of East Jerusalem], which is on the Israeli-occupied territory of the West Bank. Moscow confirms its principle position based on the corresponding resolutions of the international community on the illegal Israeli settlement activity on Palestinian territory,” the statement reads.
Last November, the Israeli Interior Ministry confirmed the construction of 500 new units for Jewish families in Ramat Shlomo. The move was met with international condemnation.
Palestinians seek to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip requesting Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories it took after the 1967 war.
Israel has been building settlements on the occupied areas, consistently disregarding objection from the United Nations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated before March elections in the country that he would oppose the creation of the Palestinian state. Following the reelection, Netanyahu claimed that the two-state solution was possible, but only under strict conditions.
