NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – Pakistan is to remain neutral in its approach to the Yemen conflict, according to a resolution approved by the Pakistani parliament on Friday.

“Pakistan needs to hold a neutral position on the Yemen conflict in order to be able to play an active diplomatic role in solving the crisis,” the resolution reads.

Earlier Saudi Arabia called on Pakistan to join the coalition and send troops, warships, and airplanes to participate in the military operation in Yemen. The Pakistani parliament discussed the issue throughout the entire week.

Earlier this month, the Pakistani ambassador to Russia told Sputnik that regardless of the parliament’s decision on joining the anti-Houthi coalition Saudi Arabia will remain a “strategic ally and close brotherly country that always stood by Pakistan.”

Yemen is currently the scene of armed clashes as Houthi militants continue to overrun areas controlled by troops loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who fled the country amid the insurgency.

The Saudi-led coalition started carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen on March 25 in response to a request by Hadi.

The United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan, and Egypt form the coalition, alongside Saudi Arabia, with the United States providing intelligence, targeting and logistical support.
