The blaze at the ironically named “Marina Torch” tower, was exacerbated by the high winds of a sandstorm. It was extinguished by firefighters who worked for more than two hours to get the fire under control.

Though the fire started in the middle of the 336-meter-high tower, it quickly spread, spanning many floors, and there appeared to be a separate fire nearer the base of the tower.

"There was debris flying everywhere, falling into neighbouring buildings," one witness told the BBC.
Thousands of residents were evacuated, according to various news reports, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. Residents of apartments on lower floors were permitted to return to their homes shortly before 5:00 AM local time.
