According to a Libyan oil company's spokesperson, workers at Mabruk safely left the premises, while the status of the oil field remains unknown.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Unidentified gunmen have stormed the Mabruk oil field in central Libya, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing a spokesperson from state oil company National Oil Corporation (NOC).

According to the spokesperson, workers at Mabruk safely left the premises, while the status of the oil field remains unknown.

Libya has been in social and political turmoil since the overthrow of the country's long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Several militia groups have been involved in the struggle for power since.

The country has seen several attacks on its oil fields by armed groups, with Libya's two main oil ports, Ra's Lanuf and Es Sider, remaining closed since December 2014.

The Mabruk oil field has been developed by Mabruk Oil Operations, one of the oil companies operating on behalf of NOC.

Mabruk oil field is located some 170 kilometers (106 miles) south of the town of Sirte. It was first discovered in 1954 but its development began only in 1994.
