MOSCOW, January 6 (Sputnik) – Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi was received on Monday by the Emir of Kuwait and his government ministers for a two-day visit, his first to the country since being elected head of state in March 2014, Kuwaiti News Agency KUNA has reported.

“The Kuwaiti and Egyptian peoples stood side by side in many a crisis throughout history,” Karim Suleiman, Egypt’s ambassador in Kuwait, told Egypt’s Castle Journal news website. “The furthering of economic relations is one goal, and the visit of President El-Sisi may be aimed at promoting Kuwaiti investments in Egypt, beside other issues such as political reinforcements and terrorism in the Arab world crisis.”

According to the report, Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah invited the President for a state visit after his inauguration in June, coverage of which was broadcast Monday live on both Kuwaiti and Egyptian state television from Kuwait International Airport.

KUNA reports that El-Sisi was accompanied by several top government officials, including the Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri, Minister of Oil and Mineral Wealth Sherif Ismail, Minister of International Cooperation Najlaa Al-Ahwani, and Minister of Investment Ashraf Salman, while the Emir’s contingent included His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and Deputy Chief of the National Guard Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

El-Sisi, a former Egyptian army chief, was inaugurated Egyptian president in June after winning a reported 96 percent of the vote in the country's May elections against his only opponent, Hamdeen Sabahi. The elections were the first in the country since the 2012 election of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi, who was later ousted by an El-Sisi led coalition.
