UN Special Envoy for Syria urged international community on Tuesday to channel its efforts into fighting terrorist organizations Islamic State and Jabhat Al-Nusra.

DAMASCUS, November 11 (RIA Novosti) — UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Tuesday called upon the international society to channel its efforts into fighting terrorist groups acting in Syria.

"The time has come to concentrate our efforts on the implementation of the [UN] resolution 2170, that calls for the fight against terrorist organizations Islamic State [IS] and Jabhat Al-Nusra," de Mistura said answering a RIA Novosti question during a press conference in Damascus, Syria.

The UN resolution 2170 was adopted on August 15 by the UN Security Council (UNSC). It condemns “gross, systematic and widespread abuse” of human rights by the Islamic State (IS) and Al-Nusra Front, also known as Jabhat Al-Nusra.

De Mistura has come for a three-day visit to Syria, during which he conducted several meetings including one with Syrian President Bashar Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallim.

Syria is currently experiencing the tide of terrorist activity, with Islamic State being one of the most influential terrorist groups.

Both Al-Nusra and Islamic State (IS) are being targeted by the US-led anti-terrorism coalition.
